Overall, anesthesiology is a moderately competitive specialty. While students from the full spectrum of academic achievement have consistently matched to this specialty, in recent years many of those who did not match and had to scramble were students from the lower third of the class who also had below average board scores. While anesthesia accessible for all students, academically weaker candidates should consider a national search and include a range of programs, especially those in community hospitals or less desired geographic regions. The strength of the department of here precludes the need for away rotations; however, these can be valuable especially if you are looking toward a competitive program or location (e.g. the West Coast).
